Irongates and Court House Frome grade 2* listed buildings |
|
|
Our shop is housed in one of the oldest building
in Frome. Irongates, was the first building in Frome to be listed.
The building dates from about 1696 but evidence indicate the presents of an earlier building. There are blocked mul1ioned windows in the wall of the Court house facing Safeway's which suggest an earlier date but the style of the Irongates is about right for c.1700. The property belonged to a John Gifford at the end of the 17th
century as shown in the church rates for that time. so it was probably
him that updated the previous building to the new style. A grand house
in its own gardens to the side and rear. Although at that
time, Walter merchant was recorded as living in the building. The
Gifford and marchant families were inter-related by marriage. The Merchants
gave their name to Merchants Barton an area of Frome near
by.
